What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

Our engineers have years of experience in the electrical and renewable industries, and possess all the correct credentials required to gain access to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives you the chance to apply for a grant to cover part of the cost of replacing your traditional fossil fuel heating systems (including oil, gas or liquefied petroleum gas) with either a heat pump or a biomass boiler.

This is to incentivise homes and businesses to move away from fossil fuels, towards more efficient and sustainable energy dependency.

How Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme Work?

Each grant is limited to one per property, but they are available for the following:

  • £7,500 towards an air source heat pump
  • £7,500 towards a ground source heat pump (including water source heat pumps and those on shared ground loops)
  • £5,000 towards a biomass boiler

Do note, however, certain limitations do apply to the scheme, for example you cannot get a grant for a hybrid heat pump, and the system you’re looking to have installed must meet certain standards in efficiency.

The maximum capacity is 45kWth for individual systems and 300kWth for shared ground loops.

Get in touch with us now, and we can advise you on what is required to take advantage of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme prior to installation.

Am I Eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant?

There are certain eligibility criteria that you must satisfy in order to successfully apply for the grant.

This includes:

  • You must own the property that you’re applying for – this includes business premises, second homes, or properties that you rent out to tenants.
  • You must be replacing a fossil fuel heating system, such as oil, gas, electric or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).
  • You can still apply if you’ve already been granted funding for other energy efficient installations, such as insulation for example.
  • The installer must be MSC Accredited and must commission the installation of the heat pump within 120 days of applying for the grant or you will not be eligible.
  • Your property must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), these are valid for 10 years.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme FAQS

Are There Any Properties That Aren’t Eligible for a Heat Pump Grant?

There are a few different property types and circumstances that will make you ineligible for a grant, such as:

  • Most new build properties are exempt, including those which the developer is still building.
  • Social housing.
  • A property that has already had government funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler.

Do note, that in some circumstances where you moved into a new build property which already contains a fossil fuel boiler, you may be eligible for a grant under the scheme, so it’s always worth getting in touch with us to see what your options are.

Can I Get a Heat Pump Grant for a Self Build?

Even though you aren’t able to get a grant for biomass boiler on a self build property, you may be eligible for a heat pump grant in the following circumstances:

  • You or the original owner built it yourself or paid a builder to do so.
  • It has never previously been owned by a business or similar organisation.
  • You are able to show proof that the building is a self build, with the copy of deed titles for example.
